As club captain, it gives me great pleasure to welcome all players, members, supporters, referees and visiting teams to Park Avenue for what I hope to be an enjoyable and winning season.
This is my second season as club captain and it is still a role I undertake with a mix of honour, excitement and slight trepidation. It is a great honour for my family and all those who helped me on my rugby journey - from my brother who played with Railway in the early noughties, to my parents who instilled the love of rugby in me as a child, and to my coaches and mentors in Bandon RFC where I learned to play the game. To move from where you grew up to a new city and a new club and be elected by your peers to the most prestigious playing role is very humbling and something of which I am very proud. I aim to repay the confidence the club has displayed in me.
As club captain, I see my role as being captain for the whole club and to represent all our teams - our girls youths teams, our men's U20s and all our male and female adult teams - as well as our supporters, members and sponsors. I just also happen to be captain of the men's 1st XV. Working with my fellow team captains and senior players, my role is to support all players and teams and to represent their views to the Executive Management Committee and coaching team. I will be a presence around the club, will help out where I can, and will be approachable to all.
To all our sponsors, many thanks for your continued commitment in what are difficult economic times. Your support is critical to allow the club to compete at its full potential.
Finally, to all visiting teams and referees, I promise you all that you want from rugby. A warm hearty welcome, a hard and fair game on the field, and the best of hospitality afterwards - you will find wins elusive though!
